2019
Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to systematically revise the root canal configuration (RCC) literature and to investigate the root canal morphology of mandibular first premolars (Ma1Ps) of 2 populations by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. Methods This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines including RCC randomized controlled trials and cross-sectional, cohort, comparative, validation, and evaluation studies. Furthermore, the RCC, physiological foramina, the frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the physiological foramina morphology of 109 Ma1Ps were investigated by means of micro–co…
Root Canal Morphology of 116 Maxillary Second Premolars by Micro–Computed Tomography in a Mixed Swiss-German Population with Systematic Review
2020
Abstract Introduction The aim of this investigation was to examine the root canal system morphology of maxillary second premolars (Mx2Ps) of a Swiss-German population by means of micro–computed tomography and provide systematic review of the root canal configuration (RCC) literature of Mx2Ps. Methods The RCC, main foramina as well as accessory canals and foramina frequency of 116 Mx2Ps, were investigated by means of micro–computed tomography and 3-dimensional software imaging. The RCC from the coronal to apical thirds of the root as well as the main foramina number were described by using a four-digit system code. The literature review follows the PRISMA guideline analyzing randomized contr…
3-dimensional Analysis and Literature Review of the Root Canal Morphology and Physiological Foramen Geometry of 125 Mandibular Incisors by Means of M…
2019
Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the root canal system morphology of mandibular incisors by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. Methods The root canal configuration, physiological foramina, frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the size and shape of the physiological foramina of 125 mandibular incisors were investigated by means of micro-CT and 3-dimensional imaging software. Root canal configuration of the coronal, middle, and apical thirds and the physiological foramina number are described by a 4-digit system code. Results The most frequent root canal configurations were 1-1-1/1 (56%), 1-2-1/1 (17.6%), and 1-1-1/2 (10.4%); 9 additional diffe…
Symmetry of root and root canal morphology of mandibular incisors: A cone-beam computed tomography study
2019
Background Aim of this study was to analyze the root canal configuration in mandibular central and lateral incisors in vivo using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. Material and methods A total of 487 mandibular central incisors and 491 mandibular lateral incisors from 250 patients were examined using CBCT imaging, previously taken for diagnosis and treatment. The number of roots, root canal system configuration, presence of apical confluences, distance between confluences and radiographic root end, symmetry between left and right elements were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results All the examined teeth presented only one root. No significant differences were found betwee…
Root Canal Morphology and Configuration of the Mandibular Canine: A Systematic Review
2021
The aim of this study was to systematically review the root canal morphology and configuration (RCC) of mandibular canines (MaCa). The review was registered in the PROSPERO database (ID-272297) and it was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines. Three electronic databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, Scopus) were searched. Randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional, cohort, comparative, evaluation and validation studies have been included. The anatomical quality assessment (AQUA) tool was used for a quality assessment of the anatomical studies. Of 910 studies retrieved from the systematic search, 28 studies investigating RCCs were included. Most MaCa were single-rooted (87.9–100%), w…
Roentgenographic in vitro investigation of frequency and location of curvatures in human maxillary premolars.
2006
The aim of this study was to determine the location of the root canal curvature and measure the distance from the CEJ to the first curvature using in vitro methods. Extracted maxillary premolars (n = 358) were fixed and digitally radiographed using the parallel technique. Excluded from further analysis were teeth with root caries, artificial crowns, extensive fillings, or endodontic treatments. The results were descriptively analyzed and the cumulative frequencies were calculated. The median values of the distance between CEJ and first curvature were for the first right premolars 8.4 mm (buccal) and 8.5 mm (palatal), for the first left premolars 9.1 mm (buccal) and 8.9 mm (palatal). The med…
Apical root canal transportation of different pathfinding systems and their effects on shaping ability of ProTaper Next
2015
Background: This study aimed to compare glide path preparation of different pathfinding systems and their effects on the apical transportation of ProTaper Next (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) in mesial root canals of extracted human mandibular molars, using digital subtraction radiography. Materials and Methods: The mesial canals of 40 mandibular first molars (with curvature angles between 25° and 35°) were selected for this study. The specimens were divided randomly into 4 groups with 10 canals each. Glide paths were created in group 1 with #10, #15 and #20 K-type (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) stainless steel manual files; in group 2 with Path-File (Dentsply M…
Evaluation of morphological changes produced by orifice opener systems using computerized tomography (CT)
2009
Objectives: To evaluate modifications in root canal morphology following instrumentation with orifice openers using Computerized Tomography (CT). Study design: Experimental in vitro study. A preoperative CT was performed on 49 molars to measure the root canal cross-sections. After preparing the canals with 6 different nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary system orifice opener type instruments and Gates Glidden burs, a further CT was made and compared with the preoperative one. Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA statistical analysis were used. Results: Gates Glidden burs were significantly more aggressive in the coronal portion of the canals, although all the instruments removed more dental tissue in the mo…
Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT.
2017
The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 (19.5%), 2-2-1/1 (14.6%) and 2-1-1/1 (13.0%). A 1-1-1/1 configuration was observed in 93.5% and in 96.7% in the distobuccal and …
Analysis of radiologic factors in determining premolar root canal systems
2000
Abstract Objectives. Certain tooth groups pose problems as to radiologic determination of root canal morphology. For example, the premolars may have superimposed roots that give the appearance of a single canal when 2 are actually present. This study examined the effect of X-ray tube inclination so as to visualize the complete root canal system in premolars. Study Design. One hundred extracted premolars were divided into 4 groups of 25 teeth each: 1MxP (first maxillary premolar), 2MxP (second maxillary premolar), 1MdP (first mandibular premolar), and 2MdP (second mandibular premolar). A total of 10 radiographs were made of each tooth in the horizontal and vertical planes (horizontal angles …
